D. Scott Ballou

D. Scott Ballou is a partner and attorney in the firm of Brownson & Ballou, PLLP. Mr. Ballou was an Assistant County Attorney for Carver County for 5 years before being elected County Attorney in 1978 for a 4-year term. In that position, Mr. Ballou was the chief prosecutor for Carver County for all misdemeanor and felony prosecutions. Mr. Ballou also advised the Carver County Board of Commissioners on all civil matters relating to Carver County including land use, zoning, taxation and eminent domain. He was active with the Minnesota Association of County Attorneys, and continues to work actively with former and present County Attorneys, and other county officials, in civil litigation matters.

For the past 29 years, Mr. Ballou has been engaged primarily in insurance defense litigation. He has represented various companies, individuals, and public entities in a wide variety of litigation, with special emphasis in personal injury litigation pertaining to premises liability and automobile accident liability. Mr. Ballou has specialized in employment litigation representing a wide variety of clients in claims involving discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

Recently, Mr. Ballou has headed a program where the firm has been retained as Portfolio Network Counsel for a major property and casualty insurer to handle all general liability, professional liability, automobile, and asbestos-related workers’ compensation matters in Minnesota and North Dakota.

In addition, Mr. Ballou has had extensive experience defending various independent school districts throughout the State of Minnesota on a variety of claims, including premises liability, automobile accident litigation, data privacy, sexual discrimination and sexual abuse. In a recent highly publicized case, he successfully resolved claims against a suburban Twin Cities school district involving freedom of expression, religious discrimination, and First Amendment issues.

Mr. Ballou has recently been involved in a number of major cases involving copyright and trademark disputes.

Mr. Ballou is AV rated by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.

In 2010 and 2011, Mr. Ballou has been named a Super Lawyer by Superlawyers.com in the specialties of Personal Injury Defense, Employment Litigation Defense, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
